Rameshwaram and Kanyakumari are both major South Indian pilgrimage points, but they sit on opposite sides of the Tamil Nadu coastline, and the road distance between them is often underestimated. By road, it's approximately 320 km, taking around 6-7 hours depending on traffic and stops, via Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, and Nagercoil.
A fully direct drive is possible, but most travelers route through Madurai instead, since it adds only a modest detour while letting you break the journey with a night's stay and a Meenakshi Amman Temple visit. This turns one long travel day into a more comfortable multi-day circuit.
If you're aiming to catch the Kanyakumari sunrise, plan to arrive and stay overnight rather than driving through the night — the shoreline viewing point is best experienced fresh at 5:45-6:00 AM, not after a full day on the road.
