Complete Guide to Rameshwaram 22 Holy Wells Bath and Temple Rituals

Rameshwaram, located on Pamban Island in Tamil Nadu, holds an unparalleled position in Indian pilgrimage traditions. As one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlinga temples and a key site of the Char Dham yatra, millions of pilgrims arrive each year seeking salvation and spiritual cleansing. Among all rituals performed at the legendary Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple, taking a dip in the sea at Agni Theertham followed by bathing from the 22 Holy Wells (Kunds) is considered the most sacred.

Why is the 22 Wells Bath Important?

According to the Skanda Purana, after Lord Rama defeated Ravana in Lanka and rescued Goddess Sita, he sought to absolve himself of Brahma-hatya dosha. Lord Rama installed a Shiva Lingam crafted by Goddess Sita at Rameshwaram. To sanctify the temple premises, water from sacred rivers across ancient India was gathered into 22 distinct wells inside the temple precincts. Each well possesses a unique temperature, salinity, and mineral content, believed to cleanse specific physical ailments and karmic debts.

Step-by-Step Procedure for the Ritual

  1. Step 1 — Agni Theertham Sea Dip: Wake up early (between 05:00 AM and 06:00 AM) and proceed to Agni Theertham, the eastern sea beach in front of the temple tower. Perform a ceremonial ocean dip in the calm waters.
  2. Step 2 — Enter Temple Outer Precincts: Walk wet-clothed into the designated entrance for the 22 Theertham bath. Purchase the official bath ticket near the counter.
  3. Step 3 — Sequential 22 Wells Bath: Dedicated temple assistants draw fresh water from each numbered well using buckets and pour a cup of water over your head in sequential order from Well 1 to Well 22.
  4. Step 4 — Change Clothes: After completing the 22nd well, proceed to the dry changing rooms inside the temple complex. Put on fresh, dry traditional clothing before entering the main deity sanctum.
  5. Step 5 — Main Deity Darshan: Line up for general or special darshan of Lord Ramanathaswamy and Parvathavardhini Amman.
